Pedestrian Accidents
In 2008, 4,378 pedestrians were killed in automobile accidents in the United States. While the incidence of pedestrian fatalities has gone down slightly over the last 15 years, a tremendous number are killed and injured each year.
Pedestrian’ injuries tend to be more serious than occupants of a car accident for obvious reasons. The pedestrian has no protection whatsoever and can be thrown into another vehicle, run over, or thrown onto concrete. Pedestrians are no match for a car.
Pedestrians are also are at a disadvantage when it comes to insurance coverage. First, many pedestrians have no no automobile insurance, and therefore have no PIP coverage or UIM coverage. If a driver of an automobile with PIP coverage strikes a pedestrian, that PIP coverage will apply to the pedestrian who was injured regardless of fault. Unfortunately, many drivers do not have PIP coverage.
